Smitten Of God

From the bosom of eternity,
Into the presence of limited space.
Out from the Ivory Palaces,
To the poverty of human race.

Came the light that shineth in darkness,
And the Prince of my Father’s heart.
He came veiled in the guise of a servant,
Riches from God’s treasury to impart.

His life was a gift to others.
Forgiveness followed at His feet.
He healed as sickness was encountered.
His Father’s will, He said, was His meat.

Then the cross appeared in the picture.
They took Him as a thief in the night.
His disciples fled in their terror.
He was forsaken; darkness was His plight.

But, deeper than all earthly sorrow,
The winepress of judgment He did trod.
He became all our sins in that moment.
Upon His back was the Father’s rod.

He was smitten of God in that hour.
For a moment, Heaven turned aside.
All the universe seemed in convulsion.
The Son of God had died.

Back to the bosom of eternity,
From the darkness of an empty tomb,
